Biography of Prof. Dr. Ing. Jean-Claude Charpentier
Jean-Claude Charpentier is Professor of Chemical Engineering in the field of multiphase gas-liquid-solid catalytic reactors encountered in the field of air and water depollution and in the field of process intensification, at Ecole Supérieure de Chimie Physique Electronique de Lyon and at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Industries Chimiques (ENSIC), Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine (INPL), Nancy-Université, France. He is also Emeritus Director of Research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientific (CNRS) at the Laboratoire Réaction et Génie des Procédés LRGP/CNRS/ENSIC/INPL Nancy-Université. Prof. Charpentier has published extensively in the field of multiphase gas-solid-liquid reactors and bioreactors, and more recently in the general field of green and sustainable chemical and process engineering, and has presented 60 invited plenary or opening lectures in international congresses in the field of chemical and process engineering. The coauthor of 3 books on multiphase chemical reactors, Prof. Charpentier has been Scientific Director of the Department of Engineering Sciences of the CNRS at the Ministry of Research and Technology (1985-1992), the Scientific President of the French Society of Chemical Engineers (1997-2002) and the President of the European Federation of Chemical Engineers (2002-2006).

Confronted with the globalization of the markets, acceleration of partnerships and innovation for economic growth, and to offer a contribution to the fight against environmental destruction and often non sustainable behavior of the today world production, the chemical and related industries (Oil, Pharmaceutical, Food, Cosmetics, Environment, etc…) militate for the evolution of chemistry and chemical engineering in favor of a modern green process engineering voluntarily concerned by sustainability, which will face new challenges and stakes bearing on complex systems at the molecular scale, at the product scale and at the process scale.
Indeed, the existing and the future industry processes will be progressively more and more adapted to the principles of the « green (bio) chemistry ». This involves a modern approach of green chemical engineering that satisfies both the market requirements for specific nano and microscale end-use properties of competitive targeted green (sustainable) molecules and products, and the social and environmental constraints of sustainable industrial meso and macroscale green production processes at the scales of the units and sites of production.
These last constraints require an integrated system approach of complex multidisciplinary, non-linear, non equilibrium (bio) chemical) and catalytic processes and transport phenomena occurring on the different time and length scales of the green chemical supply chain. This means a good understanding of how phenomena at a smaller length-scale relates to properties and behavior at a longer length-scale, from the molecular and active aggregates-scales of the traditional chemistry application area up to the production-scales of the traditional chemical engineering application area..
The first successes of this integrated multiscale approach of green chemistry and engineering for process innovation is mainly due to the considerable developments in the analytical scientific techniques coupled with image processing, in the powerful computational tools and capabilities (clusters, supercomputers, cloud computers, graphic processing units, numerical codes parallelization etc.) and in the development and application of descriptive models of steady state and dynamic behavior of the objects at the scale of interest: molecule, product, process.
This modern scientific multiscale approach of green chemistry and engineering « the green approach of process engineering » that combines both market pull and technology push is strongly oriented on process intensification and on the couple green products/green processes “to produce much more and better in using much less”, and to sustainabily produce molecules and products responding to environmental and economic challenges. This requires strong scientific knowledge and exploring advances in the molecular-scale chemical fields of green synthesis, green chemistry-catalyst compatibility, green chemical solvents, aromatic and non-aromatic green chemistry, organic synthesis in different states, analytical methodologies, and in the chemical engineering-scales fields of process intensification, environmental safety technology and process design and scaling-up.
This multiscale framework amply justifies the purpose and aim of the 2nd ICEGCE which is focused on the theme: Exploring the Advances in Green Chemistry and Engineering.
